Ocean Kayak Fishing
You’ve probably been fishing in a motor boat many times or even in a canoe. But unless you’ve gone ocean kayak fishing, you don’t know what you’re missing. For most people, the first time they set foot in a kayak, they are hooked. I compare it to riding a motorcycle.
You know the difference between riding in a car and riding a motorcycle-how you are exposed to the elements and can feel the wind in your face on a cycle? The same goes for a kayak. You are exposed to the elements; you are sitting in the water and can reach out and touch it. You can glide easily through the water at a relatively slow pace or crank up your paddling and travel quite a distance quite easily.
Plus, with ocean kayak fishing you can get up close and personal with water fowl and sea animals. Unless you live in a cave, I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of someone in a kayak dwarfed by an Orca or other sea mammal swimming by.
Plain and simple, a kayak just gets you up close and personal with the water and everything in and on it. Now, top off that experience with being able to drop your hook over the side and land a salmon or a trout. Imagine salmon fishing from a kayak.
Now, before you run out and try to find the best fishing kayak, plop it in the water and expect to fish, let me tell you a few things first.
You either need to take a kayak fishing class or go with a very experienced friend until you know the ropes. Kayaking can be tricky so you really need to take some kayaking classes. Then once you are an experienced kayaker, take kayak fishing classes.
When you get to the point of looking to buy your own kayak, I strongly recommend you try out a bunch of boats before you buy. You can attend kayak clinics where you can talk to manufacture reps so they can help you know what kind of kayak you will need for you intended uses. You may not want to buy at the clinic although there are usually some pretty good discounts available. Another place to try out boats is through local rental places who also sell boats. They will be more than happy to let you try before you buy. Once you know what boat you want, you might be able to find used fishing kayaks for sale online.
If you buy used, be sure to carefully inspect it bow to stern, top to bottom looking for any cracking, swelling, abrasions, etc. Don’t buy junk. It is worth the extra money to get something you will use and enjoy. Otherwise you just end up wasting the money you spent on the junk.
When you get your kayak for fishing or just to watch the whales, come back and let me know what you got and where you boat.
Happy Fishing/Whale Watching.
